T22 Hualien: Project Review Video T22 Design Revitalization Project

Since 2021, the T22 Design Revitalization Project has engaged with Hualien’s stone industry, bringing new perspectives and creative methods to local production. Over four years of effort, T22 has launched collaborative design products and exhibitions, while leading large-scale factory transformations in Hualien. These initiatives have earned recognition from international design awards such as the Good Design Award Winner, Golden Pin Design Award, and TID Award. Through innovative programs such as the Earthquake Board Study Tour and Stone Salon, T22 successfully facilitated 18 diverse stone application projects. These include collaborations with Michelin restaurants, international hotels, homestays, art spaces, dessert shops, public art installations, public furniture, and corporate gifts. These achievements have elevated the brand value and market visibility of Hualien’s stone industry, rebuilding confidence among local businesses and forming a collaborative alliance known as the "Just Do It Stone Club". Together, they continue to advance the growth and innovation of Hualien's stone industry. The “T22 Design Revitalization Project,” launched by the Taiwan Design Research Institute, aims to rejuvenate local industries through the power of design. By connecting designers with local producers, the initiative seeks to overcome challenges and spark new vitality within regional manufacturing. As the exclusive media partner of the “T22 Hualien Factory Revitalization Program,” Interior magazine offers readers an in-depth look at the collaboration between industry professionals and design teams. SanTai Mine (operated by Gau Yang Yi Enterprise) is currently the only company in Taiwan that continues to produce serpentine marble slabs, operating the nation’s sole large-scale serpentine quarry. The editorial team had the privilege of visiting the remote mountain mining area to witness the beauty of the stone veins firsthand. Yet, as times changed, it became associated with traditional and heavy imagery. Today, a new generation is determined to reshape that perception. Moving from the quarries into the design world, they combine modern aesthetics with sustainable concepts, allowing serpentine marble to enter daily life in a lighter, more refined form. Whether in minimalist home interiors, boutique counters, or handcrafted décor, the stone’s layered patterns and natural warmth reveal a renewed charm. “We hope people can once again see the beauty of Taiwan’s stone — not just as a building material, but as a form of natural art.” Through brand identity development and design collaboration, this treasure from the land has found new value between sustainability and design. A New Generation Revives Hualien’s Serpentine Marble with Design

Serpentine marble, with its deep green hue and flowing vein patterns resembling serpents, is found in only two places in the world — Italy and Hualien, Taiwan. The founder of this serpentine enterprise, Hsu Wen-Ching, began his journey at the age of 23, traveling from Taitung to Hualien to work as a stone laborer. Through years of dedication, he became a contractor and eventually acquired his own mining rights. Rather than relying on explosives, he introduced chain saw machinery from Italy and pioneered an innovative top-down mining technique that reduced stone fragmentation and allowed precise control of excavation areas. After hours of winding mountain roads, one finally reaches the origin of Taiwan’s serpentine marble. Unlike the pure white Carrara quarries of Italy, Taiwan’s serpentine mines unfold in layers of jade and deep green, hidden within dense mountain forests — a place few have ever seen. The quarry feels like a vast library of history, where every slab of stone resembles a heavy book, recording the passage of time and the changes of the earth. Beneath one’s feet lie textures formed through countless years, alongside freshly cut surfaces that reveal the stone’s living essence. Standing amid the quarry feels like walking inside a work of art — a quiet journey through the mountains of life itself.
