Mu Dreamer - Founder Chia-Na Wang

 About Mu Dreamer Workshop

In the remote indigenous villages of eastern Taiwan, many children grow up without sufficient family support or a sense of accomplishment in learning. Former Hualien Yudong Junior High School teacher Wang Chia-Na, skilled in woodworking, decided to use his craft to guide and accompany local students. Over the past two decades, he has led woodworking classes that nurture both craftsmanship and confidence. Under the name “Yudong Carpenter,” he and his students have held exhibitions in Taipei, expanding their horizons and strengthening their self-esteem.

However, after graduation, many of these students still face limited job opportunities in Hualien. The woodworking industry and vocational pathways remain underdeveloped, forcing talented youth to leave their hometowns for study or work. To address this, Wang and a group of supporters established the Taiwan Mu Dreamer Talent Development Association, aiming to cultivate woodworking talent so that children from rural areas can put down roots in their communities and bring positive change to their hometowns.

Looking ahead, they hope to create a “Workshop of Hope” — a space where young people can build sustainable careers through their craft. For returning youth, this workshop represents not only family stability and livelihood but also the chance to create meaningful, value-driven products with their own hands. More importantly, it symbolizes a home — a place in Yuli that always welcomes those who have left to return with pride.

Wang envisions more industries joining this effort to bring opportunities to rural areas across Taiwan, revitalizing local economies and fostering a cycle of growth.

Woodcraft Education. Rural Revitalization. Skill Empowerment.

Designer Hsi-Min Cheng

Designer Cheng Hsi-Min has long focused on integrating natural stone with everyday design. Guided by the belief in “returning stone to nature,” he works with rare local serpentine sourced from Taiwan, using minimal human intervention to preserve each stone’s inherent texture and grain. His creations, such as handcrafted natural washbasins, embody both artistry and functionality.

Cheng’s work emphasizes the spirit of the raw stone. Each washbasin is carved from a single block of serpentine, following the stone’s natural contours rather than imposing symmetry or perfection. By responding to its veins, fissures, and layers, he allows water to flow across the surface in a rhythm that feels organic and alive.

To achieve visual purity, Cheng developed a custom drainage system that combines metal and stone so the drain integrates seamlessly into the overall form. This innovation balances function and aesthetics while reflecting his meticulous attention to detail and material craftsmanship.

Cheng Hsi-Min’s serpentine washbasins are more than utilitarian objects; they are natural sculptures symbolizing harmony between human craft and the raw beauty of nature.
