Artist-Li Yao Cheng
In his latest solo exhibition, The Inner Connection to Reality, artist Yao-Cheng Li uses stone, resin, and light as his mediums, seeking to transform fragments of daily life into forms that can be quietly observed — each carrying the imprint of time. Through stone, a material shaped by countless layers of weathering, transport, and sedimentation, Li interprets life itself as an accumulation of multiple identities and repetitive routines, reflecting on the trajectory of his own creative journey.
For Li, creation is both an outward response and an inward gaze. He studies the veins and textures of stone with sensitivity, gently sealing within them traces of cracks and breath. Through repeated exploration of light’s transparency, refraction, and lingering, he allows light to drift freely between the stones. In this quiet process of observing textures, he rediscovers the encounters and experiences that have become the nutrients of his creative life.
The exhibition is not merely a presentation of works but a tranquil passage carved between time and the artist’s inner world — an invitation for viewers to find reflections of themselves within the vast landscape of time and space. As one moves through this contemplative terrain, one is reminded of the continual search for truth, direction, and balance within the layered rhythms of life.
Born in Taichung, Taiwan, in 1993, Li graduated from the Department of Plastic Arts at Dayeh University in 2016. From a young age, he has been fascinated by the texture of stone and the interplay of light and shadow, first exploring these qualities through photography. His acute sensitivity to natural forms and light later extended into his sculptural practice.
Using stone as a point of departure, Li delves into the stories embedded within the material, creating works that are both poetic and temporal. His practice not only reveals the natural patterns of stone but also condenses time, memory, and emotion into tangible form.
Li has held several solo exhibitions in Taiwan, including Seeking Light, Light Diary, Pursuing the Light, and Phototropism. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and major art fairs such as the Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung Art Fairs, as well as World Art Dubai and Art Busan. He currently lives and works in Taichung, continuing to explore time, space, and emotion through the dialogue between stone and light.
